Self-Development as an Unwrapping... the beauty in removing the layers
The other day a friend of mine taught me the German word for self development: ‘Entwickeln’.
Translated literally, Entwickeln can also mean unwrapping.
I really love the idea of developing oneself being an unwrapping. Unwrapping layers of societal expectations, conditioned beliefs and self-imposed limitations. And what is concealed beneath is the core essence of who we are and everything we can become.
The layer of Societal conditioning… From a young age, we are shaped by cultural norms, family expectations, and societal standards that dictate how we should behave, what we should aspire to, and what defines success. This layer serves as a protective barrier, providing a sense of conformity and belonging.
But as we peal back this layer, what do you truly want? What is right for you? What is your heart and gut telling you?
The next layer to unwrap is the influence of external opinions and judgements. The opinions of others, whether well-intentioned or not, can create a shell around our authentic selves. Fear of judgment and rejection often leads us to conform. If you unwrap this layer and let go of what others think, what opens up for you?
For me, the most important layer to unwrap is our own self-doubt and limiting beliefs. We so often internalise negative experiences and form a protective layer around us. And understandably so. However, this layer hinders our growth. Unwrapping this layer requires introspection and self-awareness. It involves challenging and reframing these limiting-beliefs. What does pealing back this layer look like for you?
I feel that often our society regards self-development as changing oneself, acquiring more... whether it be achievements, possessions or even people. I have always felt self-development to be the opposite. Our highest potential and truest, best version of ourselves is within. With the unwrapping is a sense of revelation and celebration. Each layer removed brings us closer to our authentic selves, allowing us to live more purposefully and authentically, and to stand in our truth.
